Standard Manufacturing Practice
Products are melted in an electric arc furnace (EAF) using primarily scrap metals, and in some cases, pig iron and/or other iron substitutes. Heats are processed through a ladle metallurgy furnace (LMF) and vacuum tank degasser (VTD) as needed to meet desired specifications. Heats are then continuous cast into either a 10" x 14" bloom or a 7" x 7" billet using electromagnetic stirring (EMS) as determined by product. Blooms and/or billets are then charged into a re-heat furnace, either cold or hot, and rolled into any number of size and shape combinations. Depending on bar size and shape combination, products are saw cut or shear cut to ordered length (16' - 40'), packaged, tagged, and staged for shipment. SDI has a metallurgical lab with comprehensive testing capabilities.
Specific process and quality requirements will be identified with SDl's Certified Mill Test Report (CMTR), and is provided with each order.
